There are many reasons for writing term papers. Students may decide to write a term paper in order to explore the new areas of interest, gather new data, or refactor an existing topic. Regardless of the reason, though term papers must adhere to the same rules. A good term paper is written in a technical and formal language, provides a well-organized and clear argument, and ends with a clear and well-structured conclusion. The main concept of the paper should not be lost in the text clutter. The term should clearly communicate the primary idea.

Citations. Citations. Students must cite all sources on their term papers. Each source must be cited and a date added. The number of sources is not restricted; the student can include additional materials like a note section that is included at the end of the paper which contains an analysis of the sources. The reference list should be alphabetical and in a sequential order, starting from the most recent up to the oldest.

Length. Length. All term papers should not exceed one page. A research paper on the other hand, may be anywhere from three to five pages, depending on the length of your research. Due to the nature of research papers, the length of term papers can vary significantly. Students should decide the length of their papers in accordance with their academic degree of proficiency and personal preference.

Reception. Writing a term paper is different from researching a paper, in large part because the first draft isn’t intended to be read by anyone but the writer! Students often struggle when they write their second draft of the paper and are too worried about grammatical mistakes or tense shifts to focus on the nature of the paper. Writing term papers requires them to let go of their reader’s response concerns and concentrate on the content. This will let them write and revise their work in a focused, clear way.
